Summary
- What it is
- An explanation of NAD+ biology and an honest look at NMN supplementation.
- Who it is for
- Anyone who has encountered NAD+ or NMN marketing.
- Evidence level
- Human data exists but remains early; claims often outrun it.
- Bottom line
- Real biology, genuine interest — but the evidence is not yet settled.
NAD+ and its precursor NMN are among the most marketed ideas in consumer longevity. The underlying biology is real. The marketing frequently runs ahead of the evidence.
What NAD+ actually is
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme essential to energy metabolism and to numerous cellular processes. It is genuinely important biology, and NAD+ levels do appear to change with age. That much is not in dispute.
The NMN hypothesis
NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor the body can use to make NAD+. The hypothesis behind NMN supplements is straightforward: supply more precursor, support NAD+ levels, and perhaps influence aging-related processes. It is a reasonable hypothesis. A reasonable hypothesis is not the same as a proven therapy.
What the evidence shows — and does not
There is preclinical work and some early human data on NAD+ precursors. What is not yet established is that NMN supplementation produces meaningful longevity or healthspan benefits in humans. The honest evidence rating here is “human pilot” — interesting, ongoing, not settled. Marketing that presents NMN as proven is getting ahead of the science.
NAD+ is real and important; that is exactly why it makes effective marketing copy. But ‘this molecule matters’ and ‘this supplement will help you’ are two very different claims. The first is established. The second, for NMN, is still genuinely unsettled — and a good practice will say so.
